October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is almost upon us - the month when fundraising becomes vigilant for breast cancer research. Based on my 30 years of working in the field of supportive care medicine and pyscho-emotional support for those experiencing breast cancer; I would like to see more emphasis placed on these supportive care factors - in other words, we need to see dollars going towards pro-active and educative support groups as well as for medical research. We  need to be aware of helping women NOW! How can we effectively support women through their trauma, help them build resilence, improve emotional health and lifestyle, improve life quality and longevity?

From being a pro-active advocate for thousands of women around the world who have, or who have had breast cancer - I know how important it is to enhance a woman’s healing and recovery by way of emotional support. This in turn helps her family’s ability to adapt and manage the situation - the result of these interventions, yield results far beyond expectations.  Importantly, these tools also help women to adapt to the many issues that breast cancer presents: Breast cancer may not be a life threatening illness, but it is definitely a life altering illness that requires special attention to special needs. Women of Silence - first edition 1994 (out of print) - second revised, updated and re written version published 2003 - is now available for sale in Australia from www.gracegawler.com  Does someone you know have breast cancer - and you do don’t know how best to help them?
