Grace Gawler: Who am I? For most of my life –I am now 56 – I have had an intimate connection with healthy lifestyles. I became a vegetarian at 5 years of age and was enjoying fresh juices and exercise at my uncle’s gymnasium when I was at high school. We always at wholemeal bread, my mum cooked in stainless steel and I learned about and used natural Swiss Skin care products because in my biology classes I learned about the absorptive capacity of our skin. "The skin absorbs 60% of all chemicals we use on our skin and hair.” – Health Report UK
I was really in to total healthcare! Or so I thought…..but there was more to come… Although I became a part-time model, my interest was science based in particular veterinary science and cancer medicine. Keen to pay my way through university I also became a veterinary nurse – then a major crossroad appeared in my life –“my personal road-test” - I married a vet who had cancer-serious life threatening bone cancer. Walking on that road to recovery with him provided me with tremendous experience and knowledge - and so, based on the choices I made; my destiny was determined. This then led to studies and qualifications in natural healthcare throughout the late 1970’s and 1980’s. I learned about the importance of attitude, psychological states that enhance recovery and importantly the immense capacities of the human spirit and the soul’s needs in this life.
My work with cancer patients saw the establishment of the Gawler Foundation – so, with an in depth understanding of the role of proactive advocate & care-giver combined with my qualifications and an intimate understanding of the nature of cancer, the next part of my life was mapped out. However in 1997 – my marriage ended abruptly – in shock my uterus prolapsed. The surgical repair went awry and overnight I became a patient. Massively damaged nerves meant that my bowel ceased to function. 20 major surgeries later and a bionic device combined with an amazing formulation from the USA, have seen me make an unexpected and full recovery. So with all that experience behind me – my understanding of the definition of real Wellness has morphed and evolved into more than a holistic model of care- some call it a holographic approach.
A forensic naturopath, herbalist, lifestyle counsellor, author, speaker and international wellness entrepreneur are a few of the “healing hats’ I wear. I specialize in individualizing wellness and recovery programs for people with life-challenging illness as well as searching for solutions for those whose lives are compromised by “unknown” health issues. Summary Grace, Grit and Gratitude - $35 includes postage in Australia ( signed copies )
"If you ever thought you were having a bad day or experiencing a dark night of the soul and feel "stuck" in adversity - Then this is the book for you! Inspiring reading - written with compassion, elegance and intelligence - you wont be able to put it down"!
In 1975, Grace Gawler had a promising future. A brilliant young vet nurse planning to study veterinary medicine, she received a lucrative modelling offer, which would have paid her university fees. Concurrently, her boyfriend lost his leg to bone cancer.
Grace was at a vital choice point—either pursue glamorous, well-paid modelling work while studying to become a vet, or support her boyfriend through his dying months. The latter meant foregoing her personal and financial independence—and lifelong dreams of becoming a vet.
Grace chose to support Ian. Believing that his cancer was curable, she directed her passion into his healing, dedicating 18-hour days—focusing on juicing, massages, and pain management, whilst researching every cure imaginable. With just a few weeks to live—Ian proposed. Grace accepted, taking him to the Philippines for a healing honeymoon, the beginning of a long road to recovery.

The first edition of Women of Silence was written and published in 1994 when I was co - director of the Gawler Foundation in Victoria. A Centre that I inspired and co-founded in the early eighties based on our journey with cancer. The centre was created to provide a model of supportive care highlighting the importance of both care-giver and patient's roles that can assist recovery. I left the Gawler Foundation in 1996 due to ethical issues and changes within the organisation that were not in alignment with my personal and professional views. My work is no longer reflected in what has become known as the Gawler approach. Fortunately, both editions of Women of Silence - provide the reader with a window of opportunity to glean the concepts of our original approach. A best seller of its genre, Women of Silence is based upon the stories and life experiences of women at all stages of breast cancer. This first edition is now out of print.
The second edition (2003 Published in the UK-revised and updated) has added sections for care-givers and their are new sections on dealing with trauma, boundaries, questions to ask your doctor and much more.
